Picturehouse Bradford is thrilled to announce that Alfonso Cuaron’s space epic Gravity 3D will be launching Rewind Wednesdays, a new monthly showcase of modern IMAX classics on West Yorkshire’s biggest screen, on 26 April.
Working closely with IMAX, NASA and visual effects company Framestore, Gravity became a landmark achievement in 3D cinema, receiving seven Academy Awards – including Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, and Best Directing. We can’t think of a better place to watch this filmmaking marvel than the National Science and Media Museum!
Film critic Jonathan Romney (Sight And Sound) hails Gravity, “for its vividness and for the artful elasticity with which it manipulates our sense of orientation – our bodily experience of watching, of being quasi-literally ‘moved’ by 3D imagery. This is surely the closest cinema comes to three-dimensional virtual abseiling.” he states.
This bodily experience is enhanced by IMAX, who have digitally re-mastered the film into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience. Coming from IMAX, Gravity’s leading stereography supervisor Chris Parks, knows how to maximise the audience’s perceived peripheral vision. “Allowing foreground dark objects to merge with the edge of the frame [puts them] in the theatre space, but you don’t see them,” he told Sight And Sound. Add 3D to the mix and the audience truly gets pulled into the film. Gravity proves that “it’s possible to have an exciting mainstream action film that works in 3D,” Parks concludes.
Next month, Rewind Wednesdays will present a science fiction double feature of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and its newly released sequel Alien: Covenant while Tom Holland’s show-stealing turn in Captain America: Civil War returns at the end of June, just ahead of the spectacular Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Gravity 3D (12A) is showing in IMAX on Rewind Wednesdays 26 April at 7.30pm.
